Fixed and hinged windows
A fixed window does not open. It offers a large uninterrupted view, few leakage joints and no operating hardware. Provide ventilation, emergency egress and exterior cleaning by other means.
A turn or casement window is side-hinged. Multipoint locks can pull the sash against compression gaskets, supporting strong air and dust control. Inward-opening sashes need clear interior space; outward-opening units must not obstruct public paths or conflict with exterior screens and facade elements.
A tilt window is bottom-hinged and opens inward at the top for limited ventilation. Its restricted opening can be useful where full swing is undesirable, but cleaning access and hardware limits must be considered.
Tilt-and-turn windows
A tilt-and-turn window combines tilt ventilation with a side-hinged turn mode. It provides compression sealing and convenient inside cleaning. The mechanism is more complex than a simple casement, so sash dimensions, glass weight and hardware quality require careful coordination.
Users should move the handle only with the sash in the correct position. Handover should demonstrate the sequence and the method for resetting a sash if it is operated between modes.
French windows and doors
French configurations use two hinged leaves. In a floating-mullion system, opening the inactive leaf clears most of the center. This is useful for wide access or moving large items, while the meeting stile and secondary-leaf bolts need precise alignment.
Confirm the daily-use leaf, swing direction, threshold, locking sequence and whether the opening forms part of an egress route. Door sashes see more frequent and forceful use than typical windows and may need dedicated hinges, handles and reinforcement.
Conventional sliding systems
Sliding sashes move horizontally on tracks. One-, two- and three-track frames can provide different combinations of moving panels and insect screens. Because a basic slider uses overlapping interlocks and brush seals rather than full perimeter compression, its air and acoustic performance can differ from a casement.
Roller capacity, track stiffness, drainage and cleanliness determine long-term operation. Large sashes should not be specified without confirming glass weight and user operating force.
Tilt-slide systems
A tilt-slide sash first moves inward from the frame and then slides parallel to it. It can combine compression sealing with a sliding storage position and often provides a tilt ventilation mode. The mechanism needs accurate installation, a square frame and scheduled adjustment.
The clear parking space for the sash and the hardware manufacturer's dimension and weight limits should be shown on the window schedule.
Lift-slide doors
A lift-slide handle raises a large sash slightly off its seals so rollers can move it along the track; closing lowers it onto the sealing system. This supports wide, heavy glazed doors and smoother movement than an ordinary slider when correctly designed.
Threshold drainage, accessibility, panel replacement, roller capacity and structural deflection are central. “Lift-slide” is a mechanism family, not a guarantee that every size or threshold detail performs the same way.
Tilt-slide versus lift-slide
Tilt-slide is often chosen where compression sealing and a tilt mode are wanted in a moderately sized sash. Lift-slide is designed around large horizontal-moving panels and a lifting carriage. They use different frames and hardware and should not be treated as interchangeable price options after measurement.
Renovation profiles are not opening types
A renovation profile describes how a new frame interfaces with a retained existing frame. It can contain fixed, casement or other compatible sashes. Retention is appropriate only when the old frame and anchors are sound and the reduction in clear opening is acceptable.
Full-frame replacement removes the old frame and rebuilds the perimeter connection. It creates more making-good but allows a new drainage, anchorage and air-sealing strategy.
What determines successful operation
Profile stiffness, reinforcement, glass weight, hardware capacity, frame squareness, hinges or rollers, gasket compression and installation all interact. A mechanism name does not guarantee performance.
On drawings, mark every sash, direction, handle position and interior/exterior swing. Coordinate curtains, furniture, cabinets, guards, circulation, cleaning and screens. Final approval should compare the real opening size and weight with the chosen system's documented limits.
