Fixed windows
A fixed light does not open. With fewer joints and no operating hardware, it can provide a large view and strong airtightness at an efficient cost. It suits areas where ventilation, emergency egress and exterior cleaning are handled elsewhere.
Large fixed panes still require glass and frame calculations. Safety treatment, wind pressure, handling weight and replacement access must be considered before removing divisions for appearance.
Casement and single-turn windows
A side-hinged casement opens inward or outward, depending on the system. Multipoint hardware pulls the sash against compression gaskets, which generally supports good control of air, dust and sound. The swing needs clear space and must not conflict with curtains, furniture, paths or facade projections.
Hardware capacity limits sash width, height and weight. For frequent use, hinge quality, handle position and the ability to replace hardware are important parts of the specification.
Tilt and tilt-and-turn windows
A tilt-only sash opens at the top for limited ventilation. A tilt-and-turn unit combines a top-tilt mode with a side-hinged turn mode using one handle. It offers controlled ventilation and convenient interior cleaning, but requires correct operation and periodic adjustment of more complex hardware.
The user should be shown the handle sequence at handover. A sash that is forced between modes can disengage from the intended hardware position even when the window itself is sound.
Sliding windows and doors
Sliding sashes do not project into the room and can suit balconies, narrow circulation zones and familiar user habits. Conventional sliders use tracks, rollers and overlapping interlocks; they normally rely less on full perimeter compression than casement systems. Clean tracks and effective seals are therefore important in dusty environments.
Lift-slide doors raise the sash from its seals before rolling, allowing large and heavy panels with improved closure compared with a basic slider. Tilt-slide systems move the sash inward and then sideways, combining compression sealing with a sliding parking position. Each mechanism has different weight limits, threshold details, operating force and maintenance needs.
French and paired openings
French windows or doors use two hinged leaves, often with a floating mullion so the center clears when both are open. They can create a wide passage, but the meeting stile, locking sequence and inactive-leaf bolts must be specified carefully. Confirm whether either leaf must serve as an emergency exit or daily access door.
Combine types on the elevation
An effective window schedule often mixes fixed and opening lights. Fixed panes provide view and airtightness; selected opening sashes deliver ventilation and cleaning access. Align mullions with the architecture while keeping operable sashes within frame and hardware limits.
For each unit, draw the opening symbol, hinge side, handle side and interior/exterior swing. Verbal descriptions such as “left opening” are ambiguous because people view a window from different sides.
Selection checklist
- ventilation rate and user reach;
- dust, noise and air-leakage priorities;
- curtains, furniture, circulation and cleaning access;
- emergency-egress and fall-safety requirements;
- pane and sash weight versus hardware capacity;
- insect-screen type and storage position;
- sill drainage and threshold accessibility;
- availability of adjustment and replacement parts.
Choose the operating style before final measurement and fabrication. Changing it later affects profile sections, drainage, glass size, hardware, price and often the facade appearance.
