The short answer
A conventional curtain wall expresses its aluminum mullion-and-transom grid on the exterior. A frameless-looking facade reduces or conceals those external sightlines to create a more continuous glass surface. The visual difference is immediate; the engineering difference is more nuanced. Both approaches still require a calculated load path, compatible glass supports, movement joints, drained and pressure-moderated cavities, perimeter seals and maintainable interfaces with the building.
“Frameless” therefore describes the architectural appearance, not the absence of a supporting system. Before comparing quotations, establish exactly which system is being proposed: capped stick curtain wall, two-sided or four-sided structural silicone glazing, a window-wall arrangement, or a shopfront-style framed system. These are not interchangeable products.
Visible structure and architectural character
In a face-capped curtain wall, pressure plates and cover caps create clear vertical and horizontal lines. Those lines can reinforce the building grid, align with floors and fins, and make panel replacement and external inspection relatively legible.
A frameless appearance places greater emphasis on reflections, glass color and joint consistency. Because less metal is visible from outside, variations in glass flatness, frit, coating, sealant width or panel alignment become more noticeable. The cleaner visual result usually demands tighter coordination before fabrication.
Weather performance is a system property
Neither option should be judged by the amount of sealant visible at the face. Effective curtain walls manage rain through several layers: the outermost line limits direct entry, internal cavities moderate pressure, and drainage paths return incidental water to the exterior. Blocking weep routes or improvising joints on site can compromise this logic.
For structurally glazed or frameless-looking systems, structural silicone and weather seals must be specified as part of an approved assembly. Joint geometry, bite, substrate preparation, compatibility and factory quality control are engineering issues—not finishing details. A project-specific mock-up and water test may be appropriate where facade height, exposure or consequence of leakage is significant.
Scale, wind and movement
Curtain wall is well suited to large modules and multi-storey facades because mullions, transoms, anchors and glass can be sized to a defined wind load and span. A frameless appearance can also be engineered at scale, but it does not remove the underlying demand for stiffness and safe load transfer.
The design must allow for aluminum thermal movement, slab-edge tolerances, limited inter-storey movement and glass edge clearances. Corners and roof lines often see different wind pressures from the center of a facade. Large panes or high elevations require project calculations rather than a profile selected from appearance alone.
Maintenance and replacement
Face caps provide accessible external components and an obvious route for removing pressure plates during glass replacement. They also create ledges that may collect dust and need a facade-cleaning strategy.
A flush glass surface can be easier to wash visually, yet future replacement may depend on specialist sealant removal, temporary support and controlled re-glazing. Ask how a failed insulating glass unit, damaged seal or opening vent will be reached safely after handover. The best facade is not only buildable; it is serviceable throughout its intended life.
Cost: compare equivalent specifications
Material area alone does not determine price. Compare the same module sizes, glass build-up, coating, aluminum alloy and finish, mullion depth, anchors, opening vents, perimeter interfaces, access equipment, testing and warranty scope. A frameless option may show less external aluminum but require processed glass, dedicated retainers, structural sealant procedures and more factory control.
For a reliable decision, request system drawings and a schedule of components with each bid. A lower headline price is not comparable if drainage, movement, glass safety, access or testing has been omitted.
Choosing between the two
Choose a face-capped curtain wall when the grid is part of the architecture, straightforward inspection is valuable, or a proven drained assembly suits the project. Choose a frameless-looking solution when a calm, continuous glass plane is a genuine design priority and the specified structural-glazing process can be delivered and maintained.
The final decision should follow the building height, wind exposure, module dimensions, glass weight, required opening area, thermal target, site access and maintenance plan. A facade rendering is a starting point; the approved system details are the decision document.
